Abstract

Introduction: There is currently great interest, at national and international level, in the development of research skills by students in the medical sciences.

Aim: To describe the scientific production of medical sciences students in Cuban journals.

Method: Bibliometric study. Articles from 30 Cuban medical journals in the period from 1995 to January 2015 were analysed to determine the student contribution.

Results and discussion: A total of 17,040 articles were found in Cuban medical journals, of which only 2.26% was student contribution, mainly as co-authors and in original articles. The journal with more articles was MediCiego (154 articles), and there were 9 journal with no articles with student participation. None of the articles had authors that belonged to two or more centres or different countries.

Conclusions: The scientific production of medical sciences students is low, and there is no collaboration between students of different universities.
