Scientific production in Scopus and research training of a School of Health Sciences in Venezuela

Abstract

Introduction: Bibliometrics has allowed us to evaluate university quality.

Objective: to describe the scientific production in Scopus and the research training of the School of Health Sciences “Dr. Francisco Battistini Casalta”, of the Universidad de Oriente Núcleo de Bolívar, Venezuela.

Method: A bibliometric study was carried out, and the scientific production in Scopus was described based on the documents and citations by year of publication, type and language, documents by journal, the origin of the journal, most productive authors, collaboration in authorship; for research training, the subjects related to mandatory or elective research, number of credits and year of the course were identified, descriptive statistics were applied.

Results: 176 publications were found in Scopus, being 7.1% of the total of the university and 81.9% of the scientific production of the Bolívar headquarters, Bolívar State, of which 6.3% were from 2013, 82.9% were original articles, and 48.9% were published in English, 86.7% were foreign journals where 70.5% of the publications were found, international collaboration in authorship was 35.2%, the degree work and statistics were the mandatory subjects.

Conclusions: Scientific production was low, and the compulsory subjects did not lead to adequate training in research and publication.
