Training of forensic science students for the investigation of torture cases

Abstract

Introduction: The profile of forensic scientists proved to be ideal for understanding complex events of forensic interest, such as torture.

Objective: Specialized didactic tools were developed to strengthen the reliable professional competencies and activities of the graduate profile of forensic scientists in the investigation of torture cases and potentially unlawful deaths.

Method: To identify needs and challenges, two diagnostic and evaluation instruments were designed and applied to 29 students enrolled in the elective course, Istanbul Protocol and Analysis of Torture in Mexico, in August 2023 (diagnostic) and again in November 2023 (evaluation).

Results: Through trend analysis, the specialized knowledge that enables or hinders a comprehensive understanding of torture among undergraduate forensic science students was identified. Additionally, an educational sequence was designed, accompanied by specialized didactic materials: checklists, torture case files with various approaches, infographics, and rubrics for interrogation and cross-examination exercises, all tailored to the needs of the forensic scientist profile.

Conclusions: The challenges or areas of opportunity were identified, enabling the development of learning tools aimed at facilitating specialized and integrative training for assertive decision-making that adheres to good practices, meets the necessary technical-scientific standards for this type of case, prevents revictimization, and allows for effective intervention by forensic scientists.
