Introduction: This paper presents a series of analytical scenarios that examine some of the most frequent pitfalls —primarily for novice researchers— who venture into qualitative research methods.
Objective: All the scenarios aim to promote critical reflection that strengthens the rigorous use of these methods.
Results: The first scenario focuses on the articulation between quantitative and qualitative components; the second addresses the importance of constructing a well-developed protocol before beginning fieldwork; the third is a call to avoid using the COREQ guide indiscriminately, in a standardized and uncritical manner; the fourth highlights the relevance of using technological data analysis tools with a reflective approach; the fifth emphasizes the importance of not confusing research questions with those used in interview guides or with the analytical questions developed during the interpretive phase; the sixth recognizes the role of the theory that allows for more complex interpretations and progress toward deeper levels of data analysis; the seventh and final scenario is a recommendation for processing written comments in surveys.
Conclusions: The review of the different scenarios presented in this article reveals that many of the problems in qualitative research do not stem from the approach itself, but from its uncritical or superficial application.
